How It Works
A hybrid water heater does two things:
- Heats water on demand
- Stores 3-8 gallons of water in a small holding tank
When you open a hot water tap in your home, the water from the holding tank, which is maintained at a set temperature, begins to flow. At the same time, cold water enters the heat exchanger, heats quickly and enters the tank, ready to be used. When you close the tap, the tank will be replenished to the fill line, ready for the next usage.
Why Use a Hybrid System?
Hybrid systems combine the best aspects of both tank and tankless systems, providing the following benefits:
- Endless hot water - even though there is a small holding tank in a hybrid unit, you still have the benefit of endless hot water, as you get with a tankless unit.
- Good energy efficiency - the on-demand function keeps the efficiency of a hybrid system high, allowing you to save both money and energy.
- Are equipped with electronic ignition - hybrid systems are equipped with electronic ignition, which is much more efficient than standing pilot ignitions.
